What is a chimney inspection?

A chimney inspection is a close look at the chimney for safety problems, not just a cleaning. Pure Airflow Cleaning uses an internal camera and a full assessment to find cracks, liner damage, blockages, and other hazards in homes across Long Island, New York and Fairfield County, Connecticut. If a repair is needed, you get a separate price before any of that work starts.

From the firebox, a lot of the chimney is out of sight. The smoke chamber, the flue tiles or liner, and the crown are where cracks and hidden debris show up. A camera on a flexible rod reaches those spots and puts the picture on a screen you can see.

NFPA 211 recommends a chimney inspection once a year, and after any event that might have damaged it, such as a chimney fire or a serious storm. Freeze-thaw winters and coastal rain are hard on the brick chimneys common from the North Shore to Greenwich and Stamford.

What's included

What we look for

The visit is an assessment. Cleaning and repairs are separate, and each one is priced on its own.

Internal camera inspection

We run a camera through the flue so cracks, offsets, heavy creosote, and blockages are visible instead of guessed at.

A safety assessment

We look for cracked flue tiles, a failing liner, gaps in the smoke chamber, damper problems, and signs the chimney isn't drafting safely.

A straight recommendation

If the chimney needs a sweep or a repair, we say so and price that work before it happens. An inspection does not quietly turn into a rebuild.

Worth a closer look

When to book an inspection

Noticing any of these in a Long Island or Fairfield County home? Send a request and we'll help you sort it out.

Good reasons to look inside

  • It has been a year or more since the last inspection
  • You just bought the house and don't know the chimney's history
  • Smoke enters the room, or the damper won't seat
  • You've had a chimney fire, even a small one
  • Animals, a strong odor, or debris keep coming back

After weather, or before you list

  • Water stains near the fireplace after heavy rain
  • A storm damaged the cap, crown, or flashing
  • You want the chimney checked before heating season
  • You're selling and want to know what a buyer might find

Why it matters

Clean is not the same as sound.

A brushed flue can still have a cracked tile, a gap at the liner, or a crown that lets rain in. Those problems don't always show from the living room. The camera is how you see them.

If we find a hazard, we'll explain it in plain language and, when a repair is the next step, price the tuckpointing, waterproofing, cap, crown, flashing, or larger restoration before you decide.

What exactly will you do?

We tell you before we start. Air duct cleaning is a full-system cleaning of the supply ducts, return ducts, trunk lines, vents, and grilles, following NADCA standards, with before-and-after photos. Chimney cleaning removes soot, creosote, blockages, and nests from the flue and firebox. An inspection adds a camera look through the flue and a check for cracks and other safety issues. Repair covers tuckpointing, waterproofing, and the cap, crown, and flashing, up to partial or complete restoration. If something would change the work, you'll hear it before we go further.

How much will it cost?

You'll get a clear price before any work begins. We ask a few questions about the home, then give you an estimate based on its size and the work involved. If we find something on the day that would change the price, we check with you first. No surprises on the bill.

Will it make a real difference?

When dust is sitting in the ducts, cleaning it out helps air move and leaves less of it blowing back into the rooms. When creosote, a nest, or a cracked crown is the problem, sweeping, inspecting, or repairing the chimney is what makes the fireplace safer to use. If we find a different cause, we'll say so.

FAQ

Chimney inspection questions

Short answers to the questions we hear most from homeowners in Nassau, Suffolk, and Fairfield County.

See all frequently asked questions

What does a chimney camera inspection include?

An internal camera pass through the flue and a look at the parts that affect safety: the firebox, damper, smoke chamber, flue, and the visible crown, cap, and flashing. We go through what we found with you.

How is an inspection different from a sweep?

A sweep removes soot, creosote, and debris. An inspection looks for damage and hazards. Many homes need both before heating season. We can quote them together.

How often should a chimney be inspected?

Once a year is the NFPA 211 recommendation, plus an inspection after a chimney fire, a lightning strike, or a storm that may have shifted the masonry. Annual is a good habit on Long Island and in Fairfield County, where chimneys work hard in winter and take on weather the rest of the year.

Will you tell me if it needs repair?

Yes. Cracks, open mortar joints, a bad cap, a failing crown, or leaking flashing are called out plainly. Repair work is a separate estimate. You can stop after the inspection.

How much does a chimney inspection cost?

It depends on the chimney and how much of it we can access. You'll have the price before we come out. Send the ZIP code and what you've noticed.
